Chainsaw Maintenance -- Posted by admin on Friday, July 7 2006
Did you know that 90% of chainsaw maintenance comes down to how sharp the chain is kept. Blunt or incorrectly sharpened chains will result in the saw loading up in the cut or poor performance under load & excessive fuel consumption. Characteristics of a blunt or incorrectly sharpened chain is that it will produce a fine powder when cutting instead of a solid woodchip & the user tends to put an inordinate amount of downward pressure on the chainsaw to get it through the wood. This inturn flares out the rails on the guide bar & in extreme cases will cause the chainsaw to cut off to one side & premature wear on the drive sproket along with excessive forces on the crankshaft bearings & seals.

Fuel for outdoor power equipment -- Posted by admin on Friday, July 7 2006
Did you know that all outdoor power equipment is air cooled & and it is important to use the correct 2 stroke oil when mixing your fuel. Buy a reputable brand of 2 stroke oil manufactured for chainsaws, line trimmers & lawnmowers. DO NOT at any stage use a 2 stroke oil manufactured for outboard motors as these machines are water cooled & oil has a different viscosity to that of an air cooled 2 stroke oil & in most cases will result in damage to the piston & cylinder if used. The same applies to 2 stroke oils for motor cycles, even if it is air cooled. They still have different running characteristics to chainsaws, line trimmers & lawnmowers.

Stale fuel -- Posted by admin on Friday, July 7 2006
Did you know that 2 stroke fuel in outdoor power equipment will go stale within 4-6 weeks & will have a damaging effect on rubber fuel components like carburettor diaphragms & fuel pickup hoses. This is why it is imperative to use freshly mixed 2 stroke fuel to manufacturers specifications.

Chain Tension -- Posted by admin on Friday, July 7 2006
When using your chainsaw the chain heats and lengthens. For safety reasons its important that your chain is correctly tensioned.

Check your chain tension each time before you use your chainsaw and if to loose, make the necessary adjustments. Having the correct tension on your chain reduces the amount of wear and damage on your chain.
